Narrative - Andrew Goodwin (1992)

Goodwin argues that in a music video, "narrative relations are highly complex" and meaning can be created from the individual audio-viewer's personal musical taste to sophisticated intertextuality that uses multi discursive  phenomena of a western culture.
Intertextuality references other forms of text.

Narrative - Michael Shore (1984)

Shore argues that music videos are just recycled styles.

Happy days was a sitcom set in the 1950's, they integrated scenes from the actual sitcom.
It is the same narrative, boy meets girl, but using media figures and recycles cultural references.
Characters from the sitcom are edited in, the leather jacket is a code for rebellion.

A 90's music video set in the 70's vision of the 50's - multiple levels of diegesis.
